APB, released by Domark in 1989 for the ZX Spectrum, was developed by David Beresford, Graham Stafford, and David Fish, with music by David Whittaker. The game is based on the original arcade coin-op licensed from Atari Games and Tengen.
As a single-player vehicle combat arcade game, it utilizes the hardware capabilities of the ZX Spectrum, including AY sound and built-in mini-games. The 48K version incorporates a multi-loader, and the gameplay mechanics classify it as a button masher.
The cassette version was priced at £9.99, while the disk version retailed for £14.99. The title was also ported to the Amstrad CPC, Commodore 64, Amiga, and Atari ST platforms.
The game holds an average magazine score of 75.45%. It received the Crash Smash award from Crash magazine and was named a Star Player by The Games Machine.
In the USSR and Russia, the game was known through several TR-DOS versions released by groups such as Slider'21, Andy Solovarov'94, and MKHG'94. Cracked cassette versions by Matasoft were also available.
