The game is a single-player race 'n' chase title featuring 3D perspective vector graphics and AY sound. Players can control the vehicle using cursor keys, a Kempston joystick, or an Interface 2 controller.
The cassette version retailed for £9.99, while the disk edition cost £14.99. The title was also made available for the Amstrad CPC, Commodore 64, Amiga, Atari ST, and Sega Mega Drive platforms.
Hard Drivin' holds an average magazine score of 84.21%. It earned several accolades, including the Crash Smash, The Games Machine Star Player, and Your Sinclair Megagame awards, with a peak review score of 92% from Crash magazine.
The game gained significant popularity in Russia due to numerous TR-DOS releases by groups such as Studio TB and Zer0 Guys. It was frequently discussed in the local electronic press and appeared in cracked cassette versions by crackers like RAF and Lion17.
