Johnny Reb is a war strategy game released in 1983 for the ZX Spectrum 48K. It was published by MC Lothlorien Ltd and developed by Andy Pugh, Mike Cohen, Roger Lees, and Geoff Street.
The game belongs to the war strategy genre and supports up to two players. The software was written in Sinclair Basic, utilizing a unique system where each game piece held a string array interpreted as code via EVAL. This allowed computer-controlled units to execute individual strategies, such as identifying the nearest enemy or navigating strategic river crossings.
The cassette version was priced at £5.5. Beyond the ZX Spectrum, Johnny Reb was released for several other platforms, including the Amstrad CPC, BBC Micro, Commodore 64, Acorn, and Dragon 32.
The game holds a weighted user score of 7.42. According to Andy Pugh, the title sold approximately 20,000 copies, providing the developers with a modest royalty that funded Pugh's first motorcycle.
In Russia, the game became well-known due to numerous TR-DOS adaptations and several fan translations by SKL-Keeper and Hacker Sanek. Cracked cassette versions were also distributed by Rajsoft. The title frequently appeared in local gaming magazines within strategy reviews and software search lists.
