Prohibition is an action arcade game released in 1987 by the French publisher Infogrames. The project was developed by the UK-based team Pennsoft, with inlay and poster art created by Peter Austin.
The gameplay involves using a crosshair to navigate the action, drawing inspiration from the original arcade coin-op titles by Seibu Kaihatsu and Taito Corporation. The technical implementation for the ZX Spectrum 48K/128K includes AY sound support and features multi-directional scrolling.
The game was sold at a price of £9.95. In addition to the ZX Spectrum release, the title was ported to several other platforms, including Amstrad CPC, Commodore 64, Atari ST, and the Thomson MO/TO series.
The game received an average magazine score of 69.67%. Individual reviews included a 59% rating from Crash, an 8/10 score from Sinclair User, and a 7/10 rating from Your Sinclair.
The game was widely played in the Soviet Union. There were numerous TR-DOS versions released by groups such as TIM'90 and Smash Hackers, alongside several Russian translations by Mike Studio and Chasm. It was mentioned in the Spectrofon magazine, and many cracked cassette versions circulated, including an early 1989 release by Jansoft and Xland.
