Xonix was released in 1987 for the ZX Spectrum 48K. The game was developed and published by A. Surna in Lithuania.
It is a single-player arcade game based on the original coin-op title by Taito Corporation. The player controls a cursor to claim territory on the screen while avoiding enemies that patrol the remaining open space.
In Russia and the former Soviet Union, the game gained massive popularity and spawned numerous local variants like Sex Xonix, Mega Xonix, and Robo Xonix. Due to its status, the game saw dozens of TR-DOS disk adaptations and various cracked cassette releases. It was frequently discussed in magazines such as Spectrofon and Adventurer, which often provided tips and cheat codes for the different versions.
